On an entirely different note, Zweihander has the largest collection of tables for randomly-generating character traits of any game I’ve ever seen. You can generate your gender (…why?). Randomly generate your race (pretty cool). Races have randomly generated racial traits. There are also randomly generated character names, based on race and gender (ok, also pretty cool, I suppose). On and on it goes. You can’t fathom the number of randomly generated tables in this game, which I have to say, is pretty unique.

Always Chaotic Evil: Almost all the mutant races, the Chosen of Chaos and every single thing that is Abyssal. For them, slaughter and rapine are virtues. The only challenge with finding a group to play Zweihander would be connecting with gamers who like this realistic style. But, go to your local gaming store, and you’re bound to find someone who’s heard of the game, and is willing to play. Extreme Omnisexual: The Grendel want your women. They also want some of your men... and the children. Plus the occasional farm animal (though the Grendel really don't like the offspring of that particular breeding). Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Why everyone, even Beastfolk who often reproduce by seducing the willing, hates Formor, and why they're the only Chaotic species that can't be a Villain Protagonist. Though this appears to be retconning and the Chaotic races don't feel any queasiness about rape. I think that so long as you and your gaming group know what type of game you’re all getting into, if you start playing Zweihander, you should have a good shot of getting a long-term RPG campaign rolling.Zweihander uses percentile dice, which I always think is interesting for tabletop RPGs as it provides a framework which can contain a great deal of both simplicity and complexity. The point where there are restrictions is where open, free content ends. It would seem DTRPG are applying copywrite to others work of which they are only the distributor The first thing to keep in mind that Zweihander is the result of Daniel's own work. While inspired by the first two Warhammer edition it is not a clone in the sense that OSRIC, Labyrinth Lord, or Swords and Wizardry are clone of various classic edition. It is a system that is design to appeal to fans of early editions of Warhammer Fantasy, and to easily be understood by those fan. This is important to understand because this mean that in regards to Zweihander IP, Daniel has complete control over how it is to be presented and used. Should players ever feel unhappy with their roll, then they can choose to change their fortune to improve the result. However, changing fortunes also gives the GM a chance to use a misfortune to make a situation more dangerous whenever they want. Players can also choose to use a fate point to escape serious harm or even death. Despite the option to engage in combat, Zweihänder is an RPG that encourages players to investigate and use their eyes, ears and voices to discover the answers they need above all else.

First of all the Grim and Perilous Library is not a DM Guild program. It is a Onebookshelf Community Content program. Each program has their own license and their own body of IP that they offer. The only thing in common is that they are managed by Onebookshelf through DriveThruRPG. Zweihander is meant for low & dark fantasy campaigns. The creators state the book can be used to craft homebrew stories set in the works of Andrzej Sapkowski, George R.R. Martin, Glen Cook, Scott Lynch and other ‘grimdark’-inspired worlds - assuming you don't mind reworking things that clearly come from Games Workshop, such rolling up a rat catcher who knows about the secret ratmen of the sewers. Or you could play it exactly as written, which will give you a well-executed WFRP-clone. Zweihander is a game that you either love playing and you would rate it a perfect 100/100, or you don’t hardly like at all, and may note even rate it among the best TTRPGs of all time. This game is that polarizing, which as you’ll see in this review, is part of why so many people flat out love the game. Rag Tag Bunch Of Misfits: Your group of adventurers will be up of people that could include the person that throws out gunk from chamber pots.My design intention: the argument whether Zweihander RPG is OSR isn’t ours to make, but our fans believe it’s an OSR game. The OSR was one of the design principles when it was written, influenced by Maelstrom and other older games that hadn’t been revived at the time. Thus, why we categorize it as OSR. The no derivative works bit could be problematic and someone should probably clarify this with Pinnacle and OBS, but it sounds like they only want to keep you from using Savage Worlds IP outside of the program. So yes, I managed to undo half of my campaign and push three player characters towards alcoholism, insanity, and crippling pyromania, using nothing but one (1) random encounter and official rules. This all-in-one game includes most of what you need to play: a character creation guide, game mastery rules, and a bestiary brimming with creatures both fair & foul. All that’s left are a few friends, pencils, and a handful of dice. The subtitle for Zweihänder is “Grim & Perilous RPG” and honestly there’s no better way to describe it. It’s dense as treacle, dangerous as a raging fire and grimmer than a taxi queue at 3am, with a thoroughly old-school feel that will delight veteran gamers without driving away curious newcomers.

Zweihänder: Revised Core Rulebook RPG review - Tabletop Gaming

As for the OSR label, what it is the largely the work of hundreds of author doing their own thing. My voice may reach a larger audience but I don't have any bigger say about what the OSR mean then the individual who just shared their first adventure last week. But I am not going to stay silent when I see people not contributing or in Daniel's case justifying why they are not fully sharing. The creatures are basically creatures straight out of Warhammer with the serial numbers filed off. The skrrzak are the Skaven. The Aztlan are the Lizardmen. The Chosen of Chaos are Chaos Warriors. The Grendel are the Beastmen. The Dvergar are the Chaos Dwarfs. The Siabra are the Dark Elves with a Witch Queen instead of a Witch King. The Arch Cenobite is a Keeper of Secrets, the Brass Primarch is a Bloodthirster, the Abyssal Prince of Decay is Nurgle, the Abyssal Prince of Change is Tzeentch, the Orx are pretty obvious, Carnal Demons are daemonettes, the Dragon-Born Ogres are dragon ogres...the point has surely been made by now. I was basically sweating bullets as I started rolling again. Grievous injuries include such wonderful experiences as becoming a eunuch, losing a kidney, or becoming paralyzed in one or more limbs. Everyone watched as the dice came up a 99, and I consulted the chart. license, reproduce, print, publish, distribute, translate, display, publicly perform and transmit your Work, in whole and in part, in each country in the world, in all languages and formats, and by all means now known or later developed, and the right to prepare derivative works of your Work. The implication of the above is twofold, the first is that you can't bring an existing work or existing open content into a worked released within the Grim & Perilous Library. Second, any work you release first within the Grim & Perilous Library, you lose the right to use it outside of the program even if you remove all of the Zweihander IP. Yes there are individual and companies that don't contribute open content yet strive to take advantage of the OSR label. One of them is Daniel Fox and his Zweihander. RPG. Recently Erik over at Tenkar's Tavern pointed out the incongruity of having a OSR community content program.Zweihänder Grim & Perilous RPG, Character's Folio by Daniel Fox, Andrews McMeel Publishing 2020. ISBN 1524858757 Body Horror: Chaos corrupts; what drives the point home better than waking up one day with a face growing out of your armpit? When fighting in Wytchstone tainted environment, don't breathe in. Character creation in Zweihander is very in-depth. I mentioned the tables for randomly-generating your character, above. A few more tables I didn’t mention, already: there are random tables for your character’s height, weight, build, and social class. This sounds really cool at first, but just think about it. It’s the kind of thing that’s really neat in a video game, but details like that in a TTRPG are a bit (way too) much. If you are considering it, I'd recommend getting the pdf first, in particular the mobile/tablet optimised version. It's the best mobile/tablet gaming pdf I've used (YMMV).

ZWEIHÄNDER RPG - Roll20

Zweihander’s rulebook has nice coloring to show separate sections, along with easily-distinguishable headers. It is, as previously mentioned, fairly crunchy ruleswise, but I find it less so than WFRP 4th Edition. If you're looking for something light & fast to play in The Old World, this is probably not the system to go for. Running Gag: Any references to ratcatchers or the ratcatcher career will always mention their most important trapping: The small (but vicious) dog. ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG is a bloodier, grimmer and grittier version of classic tabletop role-playing games you may already familiar with. The community calls this style of gaming the pathetic aesthetic, but we simply call it grim & perilous gaming. The game has “Fury” and “Chaos” dice, which are “wild dice” for damage and random effects when casting magic.
