RS232C Standard". Knowledgebase. National Instruments. Archived from the original on 2017-03-05 . Retrieved 2017-03-05. RS232 was intended as a short distance (a few metres max) moderately low speed (9600 bps usual, up to about 100kbps in some cases, faster in very specialist situations), one device per port (exceptions proving the rule). Certain personal computers can be configured for wake-on-ring, allowing a computer that is suspended to answer a phone call.

ITU-T Recommendation V.24 - Data Communication over the telephone network - List of definitions for interchange circuits between data terminal equipment (DTE) and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE). International Telecommunication Union (ITU-T). March 1993. Archived from the original on 2015-08-17 . Retrieved 2017-03-05. In revision D of EIA-232, the D-subminiature connector was formally included as part of the standard (it was only referenced in the appendix of RS-232-C). The voltage range was extended to ±25volts, and the circuit capacitance limit was expressly stated as 2500pF. Revision E of EIA-232 introduced a new, smaller, standard D-shell 26-pin "Alt A" connector, and made other changes to improve compatibility with CCITT standards V.24, V.28 and ISO 2110. [7] This article is about the RS-232, standard. For RS-232 variants, including the common 9-pin connector, see serial port. A DB-25 connector as described in the RS-232 standard Data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) and data terminal equipment (DTE) network RS-232 adds the legacy voltage values to the binary values (0/1 or hi/lo, or "mark" and "space" in RS-232 talk). A TTL UART will output (and input) only TTL levels, essentially 0 bit = 0V and 1 bit = 5V. And many modern-day gadgets (Arduino, et.al.) simply use TTL voltage levels for serial communication. But the "proper" definition of RS-232 used a rather HIGHER and BIPOLAR voltages to define zero and one. Specifically:UART – 1200 – 12M Baud, I2C - standard mode (SM), Fast mode (FM), Fast mode plus (FM+), High Speed mode (HS) The USB to RS232 port adapter cable is one of the finest solutions for transferring data from a digital camera or PDA. This adapter cable is specially designed for connections to mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs, or modems. To get started, simply plug your device into the adapter, and the adapter into your computer system. Compared with later interfaces such as RS-422, RS-485 and Ethernet, RS-232 has lower transmission speed, shorter maximum cable length, larger voltage swing, larger standard connectors, no multipoint capability and limited multidrop capability. In modern personal computers, USB has displaced RS-232 from most of its peripheral interface roles. Thanks to their simplicity and past ubiquity, however, RS-232 interfaces are still used—particularly in industrial CNC machines, networking equipment and scientific instruments where a short-range, point-to-point, low-speed wired data connection is fully adequate. Many computer problems are caused by missing or outdated device drivers, especially in Windows 11. If your desktop or laptop is running slow, or keeps crashing or hanging, there is a good chance that updating your drivers will fix the problem. You will also see USARTs -- universal synchronous/asynchronous receiver/transmitter -- on some MCUs, as well. It just means they can do more than a UART, but that they include the UART capabilities as well. Can someone tell me why people use either USB or RS232. They are both serial ports, right? And I understand that USB is much faster (especially USB3.0) but if people wanted too I'm sure they could make a successor to RS232 that is just as fast. There are other pins for control, but they are not necessarily used. Their main function is for buffer retention control.
