Description

The T-Zone occupies central facial real estate and houses pores just like the rest of the face. Like all pores, pores along the T-zone have oil glands, which produce natural oils, otherwise known as sebum. These oils function as our biological moisturizer, if you will, and can help maintain softness and balance, in addition to adding a layer of protection between skin and the elements. As with anything, however, too much of a good thing — sebum-churning, in this case — can impose challenges. Large pores. You can easily see your pores in the mirror, especially the ones on your forehead, nose, and the sides of your nose. Before you begin taking steps to treat your combination skin, it’s important to know whether you actually do have it. Here are some signs of combination skin. See a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis:

Your skin will be left looking less shiny, with a more matte finish. You can also try using a gel moisturizer on your T-zone and a lotion everywhere else. Avoid using creams on your T-zone. Creams are best suited for dry skin. In addition to an oil-busting BHA (salicylic acid), Akram advises looking for products that contain alpha-hydroxy-acids, too. Also known as AHAs, the category includes ingredients like glycolic, lactic, and citric acids, each of which can help break up dead skin cells. In doing so, AHAs resurface the skin and clear away debris that could potentially mix with excess oil to create blemishes. One of the best ways to control an oily T-zone is to regularly wash your face. Washing your face removes excess sebum, along with dead skin cells, bacteria, and dirt. For the same pore-clearing reasons as the HydraFacial, Dr. Ofodile also recommends quarterly TCA (trichlorecetic acid) chemical peels. You'll also love this treatment for the way it improves skin texture and gets rid of non-inflammatory acne. 21. Calm down.

Consider the type of cleanser you’re using, and assess whether it could be contributing to oiliness. “To combat the oiliness, instead of using a creamy rich cleanser, opt for foam or gel-based cleansers,” advises Akram. “Choose a cleanser that contains oil-control, acne fighting ingredients.” (She loves the Environ Botanical Infused Sebu-Wash Gel Cleanser which contains ingredients such as salicylic acid, tea tree oil and citric acid and “work to remove excess surface oils — without stripping the skin.”) Activated Charcoal – ideal for drawing out excess oil and impurities from the skin, Charcoal has long been used for its absorption qualities in medicines and skincare. Another safer, lower-risk prescription option? Spironolactone, a commonly prescribed medication that helps reduce your oil production (and acne breakouts!) by reducing the type of hormone responsible for stimulating your oil glands. Again, chat with your dermatologist to see if they think you're right for it. 18. Get a laser treatment. Keeping with the theme of doing less, stop using overly harsh face scrubs. You cannot scrape away your oil glands, sorry. Exfoliating your face is still important, but Dr. Ofodile recommends doing so with products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, like glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acids ( salicylic acid), which penetrate into pores to effectively remove excess sebum. This means green tea may help limit bacterial growth that can lead to acne. Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Cocamide DEA, Sodium Chloride, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Benzyl Alcohol, PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Parfum, Salicylic Acid, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Gycerin, Benzophenone-4, Dehydroacetic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA, Menthol, Sodium Carbonate, Linalool, Benzyl Salicylate, CI 42090, CI 19140 Perfect for blemish-prone skin, this cleanser helps to clear away makeup, dirt and other impurities from your skin. The addition of zinc minimises excess oil for a less shiny appearance. Hero ingredient allantoin is an anti-irritant to help soothe skin after exfoliation whilst bolstering the skin’s natural defences against environmental aggressors. Your T-zone is made up of the ‘T’ shaped area spanning your forehead down to your nose and chin. Your T-zone contains more sebaceous glands than anywhere else on your face and so it is completely normal to appear more oily than other areas of your face. While it may be tempting to pile on the acid-spiked toners or employ an exfoliating face scrub numerous times to nix the shine, there is such a thing as too much exfoliation. “Do not over-exfoliate!” urges Akram. Doing so can actually cause oil glands to double down on oil production to compensate. Moreover, too much exfoliation can weaken your skin barrier, which is crucial in maintaining balance and healthy moisture.

Face wash helps remove debris, including makeup, dirt and pollution, and excess oil that can dull skin, clog pores, and cause discoloration and breakouts. But don’t grab any old soap: “A sulfate- and soap-free cleanser for the face will be pH-balanced and gentle to maintain skin’s barrier without stripping,” says Whitney Bowe, M.D., a New York City dermatologist and author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin. The key with this area is to remove excess oil without drying out your skin. When done regularly, certain skin care habits can help manage greasiness and reduce acne flare-ups. Bottle is recyclable.
