During the coronation ceremony the ring is placed on the fourth finger of the sovereign by the archbishop, as a symbol of 'kingly dignity'. Since the thirteenth century it has been traditional to include a ruby as the principal stone in the ring. The presentation of the ring forms part of the investiture of the coronation, which is preceded by the anointing with holy oil, and is followed by the crowning itself.

The Archbishop of Canterbury will carry out the ceremony, as Charles becomes the nation's oldest king to be crowned at the age of 73. The coronation is Britain's first in seven decades, since Queen Elizabeth II's crowning in 1953. Preston Park Museum and Grounds are also hosting a series of events throughout the bank holiday weekend to commemorate the Coronation; with arts and craft activities as well as another Coronation Big Lunch. On Monday, there is a Big Help Out bluebell planting event taking place, more details can be found here. Brambles Farm Social Club is welcoming the community to their King's Coronation Family Fun Day Weekend, on the Saturday and Sunday of the bank holiday weekend from 12pm until 8pm. The events will have everything from inflatables, assault courses, stalls, face painters and crafts. During the recognition, the King stands in the coronation theatre and turns to show himself to the people at each of the four directions – east, south, west and north. He is presented with the coronation bible and takes the oath, and then prays aloud with the King's Prayer. Next the King holds the sovereign’s orb, before it is returned to the altar and touches the sovereign’s ring, puts on the single white coronation glove to hold the sovereign’s sceptre with cross in his right hand, with sovereign’s sceptre with dove in his left, ready to be crowned. The Queen's Lord Lieutenants commissioned artist Terence Cuneo to paint the Coronation ceremony and in 1954 Herbert James Gunn painted a State Portrait of The Queen in her Coronation outfit. Gun salutes at the Tower of London are fired by the Honourable Artillery Company, and at all saluting stations throughout the UK, Gibraltar, Bermuda, and ships at sea. Last year, countless people across Teesside came together in their communities to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, and local councils have announced plans to commemorate the Coronation. So what are they key dates, plans and events going on across Teesside over the Bank Holiday weekend? Here's everything you need to know. A big screen in Darlington Market Place will stream the ceremony live from Westminster Abbey, with families also invited to take part in craft sessions in marquee set up in the town centre. On Sunday, May 7, Darlington will host its own Coronation Concert with performances from Britain’s Got Talent's Soldiers of Swing and Discography. The Sovereign's procession was made up of 250 people including Church leaders, Commonwealth Prime Ministers, members of the Royal Household, civil and military leaders and the Yeoman of the Guard.

From street parties to craft workshops, concerts and live streams, there are multiple events going on across Teesside over the bank holiday weekend from Saturday, May 6 to Monday, May 8. The Coronation will see The King and Queen Consort officially be crowned at a historic service at Westminster Abbey, which is set to be watched by millions all over the world.

Westminster Abbey has been the setting for every Coronation since 1066. Before the Abbey was built, Coronations were carried out wherever was convenient, taking place in Bath, Oxford and Canterbury. In 1937, the 11 year old Princess Elizabeth had watched her father, King George VI, crowned in the elaborate ceremony and 16 years later on 2 June 1953, her own official coronation was to take place. The King and Queen arrive at the West Gate of the Abbey. The state trumpeters of the Household Cavalry, stationed in the Abbey, sound a fanfare. The King's procession, led by the Cross of Wales, begins.
