About this deal

Prospero can be seen as an authoritarian dictator. He has colonised and taken over Caliban’s island; he manipulates his daughter and her young suitor; he is cruel in his treatment of Caliban, and also Ferdinand, and keeps Ariel in a state of servitude by using draconian threats. He causes suffering to his enemies so that he can bring them together and judge them. Much of the above is behaviour with good intentions but still, the effect is the suffering of others. Magic or no magic, he is quite prepared to hurt others. However, ultimately, he is a humane man: he understands that the ability to forgive and be merciful is what makes us human. In Act 5, Prospero forgives Antonio for everything he has done. Antonio has no lines expressing how he feels about seeing Prospero again. ‘I do forgive thee / Unnatural though thou art’ (Prospero, 5:1) Prospero reads a lot and is very knowledgeable. He has taught himself to use magic and control nature.

In Act 5, Ferdinand and Alonso are both delighted to be reunited and to discover that the other is still alive. Ferdinand: ‘Though the seas threaten, they are merciful. / I have cursed them without cause.’ Alonso: ‘Now all the blessings / Of a glad father compass thee about’ (5:1) Prospero's 'our revels now are ended' speech, is recited by Anton Lesser to play out the final episode of Endeavour, the prequel to Inspector Morse. Prospero learns that the king and his followers are feeling guilty and sends Ariel to bring them to him. In the manga series One Piece, a character with the name Perospero appears in chapter 834, partly inspired by Prospero. His mother, Charlotte Linlin also seems to be inspired by the character as she is the one to use magic to control everything on the Island with her soul.In the comic book series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, Prospero appears as a founding member of the first such grouping in 1610, alongside his familiars Caliban and Ariel.

Prospero - Wikipedia

A belief in folklore and magic was common in Shakespeare’s day and many people believed in the existence of fairies and spirits. However, Prospero’s brother, Antonio, betrayed him and took his title, banishing him to live on an island with his daughter Miranda. In the beginning of the play, Miranda is presented as an obedient character. However, as the play goes on she disobeys her father several times, including by talking to Ferdinand when she has been told not to and helping him with his physical tasks. Sir John Gielgud in four BBC Radio productions: 1933 (on the BBC National Programme), 1948 (on the BBC Home Service), 1953 and 1989 (on the BBC World Service). O that you bore / The mind that I do, what a sleep were this / For your advancement’ (Antonio, 2:1)The novels and television series The Expanse use several Shakespearean allusions, including " Caliban" in reference to monstrous human-alien hybrids, and correspondingly "Prospero Station", a research facility that was developing and controlling them. Ariel then brings in Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo, wearing their stolen clothes. Prospero sets Ariel free.
