Description

The U3417W sports an ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio and 3440×1440 WQHD in maximum resolution; it also features a 99% sRGB color gamut right out of the box. Comfort is also a major focus of the U3417W. The curvature of its screen is designed to improve field of vision and minimize reflection, allowing users to focus better on the display. Dell also indicates that because of this design, there is a lot less strain on a person’s vision, as eye movement is significantly reduced. Calibrating a monitor is often a good way to improve its weaker points, if those are color accuracy or gamma. Unfortunately, it can’t help the Dell’s poor contrast ratio, or low maximum brightness.

The panel has a narrow bezel, about a quarter of an inch wide all around. Including the stand, the U3419W measures 16.4 by 32 by 8.9 inches (HWD), with the height extending to 20.9 inches when the stand is fully raised. Together, the panel and stand weigh 18 pounds. The Auto Mode section lets users automatically assign a specific Preset Mode with a specific application. When enabled, Dell Display Manager will automatically switch to the specific Preset Mode of the application once it has been loaded. Users with more than one supported Dell monitor can use the same preset on each connected monitor, or each can be individually customized. Connectors: DP 1.2, mini-DP, DP-out, 2 x HDMI 2.0, 4 x USB3.0 (2 at the side, 2 at the bottom), 2 x USB 3.0 upstream ports

Approximate diagonal size of the display. If the manufacturer does not provide such information, the diagonal is calculated from the width and height of the screen. The rest of the goodies Dell talks about are perhaps more subjective. The increased curvature, and curvature in general, really is a personal issue (I find the curvature to be a pleasing element on the desk–something I’ve not always thought with TV panels). More practically, my office is subject to light from two windows with full sun in the AM and overhead LEDs; I see no reflections whatsoever, which provides a uniform workspace. Whether or not my eyes are less tired, I’m not entirely sure. But I’m certainly not feeling any strain with the U3417W after a couple weeks of heavy usage. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality. As usual, Dell’s construction consistency is high, and there are no panel gaps or awkward flex points to speak of. In fact, apart from the Acer Predator series, both Dell screens have the best construction in the ultrawide category. No shortage of plugs Terms Apply. Promotion ends 3 December 2023. Information about the number of pixels on the horizontal and vertical side of the screen. A higher resolution allows the display of a more detailed and of higher quality image. The wingspan of this display is just over 32 inches with a slightly higher diagonally viewable size of 34.14 inches. Information of the number of pixels in a unit of length. With the decrease of the display size and the increase of its resolution, the pixel density increases. The monitor also has many features that make it useful as a shared display between two sources. It has both picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-beside-picture (PBP) modes, each with a few sub modes; for example, the PBP Aspect Ratio mode shows both inputs side by side but preserves their aspect ratio, even if their aspect ratio is different. The monitor's EDID even has a (1720x1440) entry so an input can fully cover half the screen in PBP mode. On the rear of the monitor, you’ll find I/O ports including a DisplayPort 1.2, mini DisplayPort 1.2, an additional DisplayPort 1.2 out, two HDMI 2.0 ports, and 4 USB 3.0 ports. There’s an additional two USB 3.0 ports on the monitor’s side, too, making the U3417W one of the most USB friendly monitors I’ve ever reviewed; a nice thing for anyone using a bunch of peripherals. All of the ports are fairly easy to access, as Dell has mercifully stayed away from using any weird covers or oddly recessed ports.

The U3417W provides excellent color accuracy out of the box. On the chromaticity chart below, the colored dots represent our color measurements results as measured with a colorimeter, and the boxes represent the ideal color coordinates as defined by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). As you can see, red, green, and blue colors are perfectly aligned with their corresponding boxes. Moreover, colors appeared uniform and evenly saturated in the DisplayMate Color Purity and Uniformity tests and while displaying scenes from Marvel's Captain America: Civil War on Blu-ray. Dell’s Ultrasharp monitor line includes three-year warranties, and the U3417W is no different. Of course, that doesn’t cover accidental damage, and the U3415W sports the same warranty, so there isn’t much of an incentive there. Our TakeIt’s not all bad. Its color accuracy is a little high comparatively, but still close enough for almost all users — only photographers and digital artists are likely to notice the difference. A pair of 2-watt speakers is built into the U3419W. They are decent-sounding, if a tad soft. A 3.5mm audio-out port is available should you want to use headphones or connect to powered, external speakers. Also, the U3417W doesn’t utilize any variable refresh rate technology, such as Nvidia’s G-Sync or AMD’s FreeSync. Sometimes, this can lead to screen tearing, but thankfully this didn’t appear to be a major issue with through many hours of playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Destiny 2, Overwatch, and Battlefield 1. I did get the sense that motion in fast-paced gaming scenarios could have been somewhat smoother with variable rate tech on board, but overall it didn’t seem to really detract from my gaming. The heart of the U3419W is its 34-inch (measured diagonally) panel, with a native UWQHD (3,440-by-1,440-pixel) resolution that works out to a 21:9 ultra-wide aspect ratio. Pixel density comes to 110 pixels per inch (ppi), matching that of the Asus PA34VC. That monitor, like this one, is an in-plane-switching (IPS) panel, and it has the same resolution and aspect ratio. This is a lower pixel density than 4K monitors such as the ViewSonic VP2785-4K (that one comes in at 163ppi), but it is more than enough to ensure image sharpness.
